I am completely in love with this book. Honestly, I was not expecting to get into it as deeply as I have. Marc was so charismatic that I just thought Chu's story would probably fall a little flat. I could not have been more wrong.
The Slayer skips between the present and the past; thus, many of the parts that happened during the other books involving Chu are filled in. Also, all of the characters who have grown to have a spot in our hearts are there. A bonus is that we learn more about lesser known characters who are sure to show up in future books, and of course they're awesome as well."Welcome to the wasteland for washed-up gangsters."
Chu is an MMA world champion who used to be a gangster. He tried to leave that world behind, but it crept back in. Now he's even found himself in bed with the Mafia.
I super enjoyed the bromance between Tino and Chu. They kept me smiling. Tino is really boisterous which is very complimentary to Chu's stoic nature. When Tino, Chu and Alaine had scenes, the dialogue left me truly rolling.
Chu has been in love with Alaine for five years but pushes her away because of how green she is. She's a small town girl with no experience with the way the big bad world works. But little Miss Alaine is not being left out by Chu no matter what.
This story is Chu's fighting, the sexy dealings with Alaine and Chu plus the friends involved or previously involved in organized crime. It has everything! I laughed and was emotional with tears, and I got so enwrapped that I felt like part of the cast/family. Some parts do head in a bit of a dark direction, but it definitely add to the storyline. Things don't work out perfectly for the characters some of the times which intensifies the quality for the reader.
I enjoyed this book so much that I definitely plan to do a reread, something for which I rarely allow time. It does contain some drug use, crime and murder (and a sexy Boricuan who loves to eat the P). The ending absolutely leaves you wanting the next book.
This was a 5+ star read for me, and I will certainly read the next in the series.
